Background: The seed of Wesley circuit was planted in what than was called the Old Mechanical Institution Hall in 1941. The old printing press of the Methodist Church was opened out of the Old Mechanicals Institute Hall. The missionaries than felt there was a need to cater for the English speaking children and the adults specifically targeting the Europeans and Part-Europeans, hence the beginning of the Wesley School. At the time, the Australian and New Zealand Army had a significant presence in Suva at Laucala Bay where they were based. Many of the early adherents of the Wesley church were from military background. They very first choirmaster was an army officer. In 1948 the fellowship of believers had developed into a reasonable seized congregation or church with a choir and what was known then as the Christian Endeavor. In 1951 the Wesley church had its first full-time ordained deaconess. In 1952 the MYF was established for young boys and girls. The number of members grew from year to year, until it was no longer practical to continue in the Old Mechanical Institute Hall, which is now Known as the Upper Hall. In 1957, the Methodist Annual Meeting was told that interested groups had raised over 20,000 pounds sterlings for the building of a church to be called “Wesley” on the Butt Street site. A year later, the Methodist resolved that the City Mission and the Youth centre be the focus of the Butt Street church. In 1967, the work was recognized as “Wesley Circuit Mission”. Finally, in November 1967, the present Wesley Church Building was opened (the first full time minister, Rev W.E Gillard, having been appointed in the pervious year). Today we are truly a christian community from all walks of life, ethnicity, forming a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, cosmopolitan family of God.
